Barcode Types Explained

UPC-A

The 12-digit Universal Product Code used for retail products in North America — the barcode you see at every checkout.

Best for: Retail products, point of sale

EAN-13 & EAN-8

European Article Numbers used internationally. EAN-13 has 13 digits, EAN-8 is shorter for small products.

Best for: International products, European retail

Code 128

High-density barcode that can encode all ASCII characters. Very compact and reliable for various applications.

Code 39
